megzie-the-invincible:

soapboxinggeek:

The best SuperS moments are when they get self-aware.

This past weekend at ACen I ended up ranting at one of our roomies about why Magical Girls are FEMINIST CHARACTERS and to dismiss them because of their femininity is not only sexist but, you guessed it, misogynistic. SAILOR MOON ISN’T TAKING THAT BULLSHIT. SHE’S GONNA WEAR THAT SHORT SKIRT AND SHE’S GONNA JUMP ALL THE HELL AROUND AND SHE’S GONNA JUMP AROUND ON YOUR SAD SORRY PILE OF EXISTENCE AFTER SHE’S DONE DEALING YOU A ROYAL ASS WOOPIN’ WITH HER PINK SPARKLY WAND OF GIRL POWER

*breathes*

I have a lot of feminist magical girl feels, okay???

I like you. Let’s be friends.

pussreboots:

Just bring up Duddly Do-Right’s girl friend and her relationship with horse.

That’s assuming the person I’m talking to is familiar with Rocky and Bullwinkle. I’ll have to ask him.

EDIT: He had no idea what I was talking about. I have shamed him accordingly.

The Animation Art of Ikuko Itoh

Episode 31: Loved and Chased! Luna’s Worst Day Ever

Observations:

  • I have changed the format in which I present the screenshots. I didn’t like that I had to cut off the tops and bottoms AND make the images so small you can’t see the details. So be sure to click on the images to see them full-size.
  • This episode should be called “The One Where Luna Makes Every Silly Expression Ever”
  • The other three Senshi are drawn to look fairly average, but Rei looks exceptionally beautiful.
  • This is yet another episode directed by Ikuko Itoh that focuses on a supporting character. (Which I define as any “good guy” who isn’t a Senshi)
  • There are lots of Gone With The Wind references in this episode. This was lost in translation in the English dub since they renamed Rhett Butler to “Hercules.”
  • We see a lot of Rhett Butler’s…Rhett Butthole. A cat owner was definitely involved in animating this episode.
  • When Rei and Yuuchiro are discussing possibly going on a date, the posters behind them change text and expressions in reaction to how badly the conversation is going.
  • When Mercury fails to perform Bubble Spray and falls over, her butt is directly in Jupiter’s line of sight. Look at her eyes. They don’t move. She keeps looking at Mercury’s butt. Draw your own conclusions from that.
  • There was quite a bit of self-parody in reference to the poses the Senshi make. Sailor Moon hits Mercury and Jupiter in the face when trying to do the “I’ll punish you!” hand motions, and Luna tells Mars off for posing instead of properly surveying the situation.
  • I’d say Zoisite had a much worse day than Luna. All that effort and humiliation and he doesn’t even get to keep the crystal.
  • It took about 8 tries to get that very quick smear frame when Zoisite steps into the…sewage.
  • Another episode where Tuxedo Mask doesn’t get much to do. Gotta wonder if she doesn’t like him much.
  • We went from one of the saddest episodes (Nephrite’s death) to one of the funniest ones. This one has a similar comedic art style to Sailor Moon R episode 55 (the one where Jupiter performs Supreme Thunder Dragon), which is another one Ikuko Itoh directed.
  • I love Mako’s grin at Luna when she finds out Luna has a “boyfriend.”

bigdots said: Hi! I followed you a little while ago. I found this tumblr through your awesome Oz articles, and stayed for the thoughtful critique. Also I'm going back through your tumblr reblogging 90% of your bird pics. Hope you don't mind! PS - I think I need to watch Sailor Moon now.

Haha, I noticed you were reblogging the bird pics! If you want two really good resources for beautiful bird pics on Tumblr, try fairy-wren or fat-birds’ blogs.

And thank you for your kind words! I wish I had nicer words to say about Oz: The Great and Powerful. I hate giving negative reviews. I even got called an SJW on Fandom!Secrets when I pointed out that it’s an asshole thing to do when you take a series specifically written to be feminist and make a movie that’s all about a man and the women who love him. But I think that person just has a really broad definition of what SJW means.

And yes. Everyone needs to watch Sailor Moon. ;)

Anonymous said: I like your clear well-written movie reviews. Why did you decide to post them on tumblr instead of blogspot?

Thank you!

There were three reasons I chose Tumblr:

  1. Blogspot/Blogger is INCREDIBLY glitchy on OS X Chrome. Multiple settings don’t work, and the tab will often crash on me for no reason. When I repost my reviews on Bitch Flicks, I have to change to Safari temporarily. I dislike using Safari most of the time.
  2. The tagging/reblogging system on Tumblr makes it much, much easier for my work to be found by people who might be interested in it. I used to have a Livejournal which went nowhere, because the only way to get discovered is if other people link to it.
  3. Most of my reviews are of media with their own fandoms, especially when I focus on animation.

Miyazaki Month: Howl’s Moving Castle

image

The next film featured in my “Miyazaki Month” retrospective is Howl’s Moving Castle. It was the successor to Spirited Away, which was supposed to be Miyazaki’s Swan Song, but then again so was Princess Mononoke. Dude’s never going to retire, and that’s just fine. It didn’t repeat Spirited Away’s success at the Oscars (losing to Curse of the Were-Rabbit) but is still a fan favourite. It’s also one of his few films to be an adaptation (Ponyo’s retelling of The Little Mermaid being the other one) though it doesn’t even try to be faithful. I have read the original book by Diana Wynne Jones, but it’s been a few years (Yes, I promise to re-read it soon). I do know for sure that the war subplot was definitely not in the novel. TV Tropes says that Miyazaki was incredibly upset by the US invasion of Iraq (as any sensible person would be) so he wove that into his adaptation. Environmentalism isn’t a theme this time (beyond lavish depictions of nature, but that’s a Ghibli thing) but pacifism and feminism make a reappearance.

Knowing Me, Knowing You

image

Knowing Me, Knowing You

When I was 12, my parents were in the process of divorcing.

Not an unusual thing, as tragic as it is. With the hindsight of adulthood, I know implicitly that it was for the best. And my sister, who was a baby at the time, doesn’t even remember it.

But at 12 years old, your emotions are reeling. You’re in a state of metamorphosis. Nothing makes sense. The entire world seems against you. It is the beginning of one stage of your life, and the end of another. I was frightened, I was angry, I was lonely.

And then one day while I was on the computer, I picked up a CD that was stored nearby on a shelf, and decided to listen to it. It was ABBA Gold, and my mother had mentioned that ABBA was one of her favourite bands. I’d never been afraid to embrace the music of previous generations, so I gave it a try.

And oh my god.

Those harmonies. Those angelic, incredible voices.

Those lyrics.

Those lyrics that managed to mirror and magnify everything that I was thinking, everything that I was feeling. They didn’t write breakup songs. They wrote divorce songs. Every single possible stab in the heart of pain that those four people went through was in their songs. The two doomed marriages were on display in every note.

And those lyrics got me through the worst time in my life.
